OET will be exhibiting at its first-ever event in Africa later this month.

OET – the English language test for healthcare professionals  comes to Africa

The Occupational English Test (OET) will be exhibiting at its first-ever event in Africa later this month. Representatives of the healthcare-specific English language test will be available to answer questions from prospective partners and candidates at the Africa Health Exhibition 2019 in Johannesburg from 28 to 30 May.

OET is an English language test that assesses the language communication skills of healthcare professionals who seek to register and practise in an English-speaking environment. The test is jointly owned by the UK’s Cambridge Assessment English (the developers of the renowned IELTS English language test) and Australia’s Box Hill Institute.

OET CEO Sujata Stead said: “Over the past year we have seen increased demand for the test in Africa, both from healthcare professionals and from healthcare boards who wish to ensure that those who join their register have the English language skills to provide safe and effective care, whether for the local population or to boost medical tourism.”

“What sets OET apart from other tests is that it’s designed for healthcare. The test uses real communication scenarios, like those healthcare professionals encounter at work every day. For example, a doctor’s speaking skills will be assessed via a face-to-face role play using a typical scenario, such as a patient consultation, where trained interlocutors play the part of a patient or carer.”

While at the Africa Health Exhibition, OET hopes to build partnerships with test venues, English language schools, higher education institutions and healthcare boards in various African countries.
