Want to live an extra for 10 years disease free? Stick to a healthy lifestyle in 2020, a new report has found!
Using data from nurses and other healthcare professionals, the study found those who stick to healthy lifestyles were at a lower risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Healthier lifestyles were found to have a positive impact on increased life expectancy and liveable years free of these diseases.
The new year is a perfect time to set new, healthy goals. Take a look at what healthy means and how you can live a healthy lifestyle in 2020.
What is a healthy lifestyle?
While more and more research shows that being healthy leads to a longer life, what being healthy means is not always obvious.
According to a Harvard Medical School, there are five areas where being healthy can reduce the chances of early death.
1. Healthy diet
Vegetables, fruits, nuts and whole grains are great, while healthy fats such as omega-3 fatty acids in fish, for instance, are also great for the heart.
Staying away from red and processed meats, sugary beverages, trans fat and sodium can also make a big difference when it comes to a healthy diet!
2. Healthy physical activity
Running, brisk walking and riding are just a few examples of moderate to vigour activity daily. Whether it’s at the gym or on a football pitch, being active for at least 30 minutes per day is counted as healthy.
3. Healthy bodyweight
While bodyweight tends to rely on other areas such as diet and physical activity, it’s a good indicator of a healthy lifestyle. Using body mass index (BMI), a healthy range is between 18.5 and 24.9.
According to Dr Mitesh Patel, assistant professor of medicine and healthcare at the University of Pennsylvania, getting a fitness tracker and synching it with your friends and colleagues helped people lose weight.
It’s pretty simple, don’t smoke if you want to live a healthy lifestyle.
While never smoking is obviously the healthiest option, every day you don’t smoke adds time to your life.
5. Healthy alcohol intake
A healthy amount of alcohol is not always clear. But Harvard Medical School measures healthy intake between 5 and 15 grams for women and 5-30 grams for men.
A good benchmark is that a typical one standard drink contains around 14 grams of alcohol. So, a beer (or better yet a light beer) or a glass a wine a day is OK.
